Emergency Department Clinical Services

Emergency Departments across the ECU Health system provide 24/7 emergency medical care at nine hospitals throughout eastern North Carolina, ensuring immediate access to treatment for acute illnesses and traumatic injuries. These departments are staffed by emergency physicians, nurses, and specialized clinical teams with access to advanced diagnostic and critical care technology.

At ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, the system’s flagship hospital, emergency care is supported by both a Level I Adult Trauma Center and a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, enabling comprehensive treatment of complex injuries from initial stabilization through recovery and rehabilitation.

Emergency departments within the system provide care for a broad range of high-acuity conditions including stroke, cardiac emergencies, severe trauma, respiratory distress, poisoning, seizures, and other life-threatening conditions. These services are integrated with specialized programs such as trauma surgery, surgical intensive care, and critical care transport to ensure rapid intervention and continuity of care.

Regional Presence and Impact

ECU Health serves as the primary regional health system for eastern North Carolina, delivering care to more than 1.4 million residents across 29 counties, many of which are rural and medically underserved.

The system includes the academic medical center in Greenville along with eight community hospitals and multiple outpatient and specialty facilities across the region.

Regional emergency and trauma coordination is supported through partnerships with EMS agencies, hospitals, and public health organizations across the 29-county trauma region. These collaborations help ensure consistent trauma protocols, coordinated patient transfers, and improved emergency preparedness throughout eastern North Carolina.

Critical care transport services, including air and ground units, extend the system’s reach further by enabling rapid transfer of critically ill or injured patients from community hospitals or emergency scenes to the region’s Level I trauma center when advanced care is required.
